Tamiru Tadesse, an electrical engineer and former university lecturer from Bensa in Ethiopia’s Sidama region, transitioned into coffee entrepreneurship with a vision to improve both quality and fairness in the industry. In 2020, together with his wife Messi, he founded Alo Coffee, aiming to elevate Sidama’s specialty coffee and provide better market access for local farmers. Their commitment to quality was quickly recognized: in 2021, their first coffee submission—carefully processed at high altitude—won the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence, affirming their mission.Today, Tamiru works closely with around 200 smallholder farmers in Delo Kebele, supporting them in producing specialty coffee while expanding their access to premium markets. His approach empowers farmers by increasing their income and recognition within the industry.Alo Coffee’s main station, located in Tamiru’s home village of Alo, is the heart of the operation. It serves as a hub for both traditional and experimental processing methods, ensuring consistent quality while fostering innovation. Through this station, cherries from local farmers are collected and processed to meet the high standards required for specialty coffee.By combining technical expertise, community-focused practices, and a passion for excellence, Tamiru and Alo Coffee continue to strengthen Sidama’s reputation as a region producing some of Ethiopia’s finest coffees.
